Day 8: Slaidburn to Carlisle

How can I sum up to-day? WET WET WET. It has been the toughest day by far and not because of the rain. The climb out of Slaidbun was long and hard as was the climb to Shap which also had high winds. However the main issue were 2 punctures and the chain being thrown off, so running repairs were order of the day.

Fancy you making a detour through Penrith - the home of the Burrells. I wonder whether you'll go through Eccelfechan today (the Fleming connection!). Hope the weather's better today. I must say that you're being very stoic in your blog - the journey doesn't sound nearly as awful as that related to me on the phone last night! Hope your clothes managed to dry out and the bottom butter's working!
